Natalia, the Singer: "Social Media Criticism Could Have Deterred My Career at 18"

by Shirley Chen

Natalia's name evokes different associations depending on one's generation. While younger audiences may think of Natalia Lacunza, a competitor from the 2018 "Operación Triunfo" edition, older fans remember Natalia Rodríguez Gallego, the singer from Sanlúcar de Barrameda. "Being called 'Natalia from OT' doesn't bother me," she shares, acknowledging the show that catapulted her to fame. "I could have chosen a stage name like Chenoa or Nuria Fergó, but I was just 18 and clueless," she admits.

In 2001, Natalia was the youngest contestant on the inaugural "Operación Triunfo," entering at 18 and leaving just shy of 19 as an unexpected musical icon. "I took it as a fun adventure, never feeling pressured," she recalls. Her debut album, "No soy un ángel," sparked playful inquiries about its title. Fast forward 23 years, her new single "Tu Diosa" resonates strongly with her sense of self-empowerment.

The single, crafted by Natalia, features Rasel and blends pop with merenguetón, afrobeats, and electronic elements. It's described as "a call to shed prejudices and embrace passion," promoting liberation but emphasizing the importance of boundaries, especially for youth. "Knowing when to set limits in relationships is crucial," Natalia stresses.

Despite her extensive romantic history, Natalia experienced her first bout of singlehood post-2020 after a 13-year relationship with ex-footballer Álex Pérez. Her brief romance with Manuel Alves ended in 2023. "I regret not enjoying single life earlier," she confesses, encouraging her dancers to avoid long-term relationships during the experimental phase of youth.

Among her hits, "Vas a volverme loca" and "Besa mi piel" stand out, yet she emphasizes her career's longevity and the consistent stream of music. Her peers from the first "Operación Triunfo" edition all thrive in various musical roles, proving success isn't solely measured by radio play or television appearances.

Transitioning to television, Natalia became the first 'OT' contestant to host shows, including "Club Megatrix," "Grand Prix del verano," and "Menuda noche." She fondly recalls her evolving role from the "sexy girl" to a prime-time presenter in "Fenómeno fan."

Natalia's time on reality shows also includes "Splash: famosos al agua" and a memorable appearance on "Tu cara me suena" as Britney Spears. While intrigued by competitions like "Bailando con las estrellas" or "MasterChef," she shies away from Eurovision, wary of its intense scrutiny.

Her enduring image — blonde hair, radiant smile — remains unchanged. Punctual despite traffic, she plans post-interview shopping for promotional events, capturing candid moments with her long-standing team.

Reflecting on social media, Natalia appreciates its absence during her early fame for safeguarding her mental health. "If I'd faced online criticism at 18, it might have been overwhelming," she admits, yet imagines the potential fan engagement if social media had existed.

Offering advice to new "OT" contestants, Natalia underscores the platform's value but warns of unrealistic expectations. "Only a few will achieve lasting musical careers," she cautions, highlighting the importance of mental health preparedness.

For Natalia, "OT" was transformative, relocating her life from Sanlúcar de Barrameda to Madrid. Her friendship circle, though small, is genuine and supportive. Among these friends are fellow contestants like Laura (Chenoa) and Geno.

In 2024, Natalia shared her egg-freezing journey on Instagram, contemplating motherhood less appealing as time passes. She cherishes her independence and recognizes the challenges of raising a child amid economic constraints. "Maintaining a child is difficult when financial stability is uncertain," she reflects.

Raised in rural isolation, Natalia envisions a future retreat to the countryside with her animals, continuing her music career until the audience's call fades. "When that time comes, I'll happily embrace my rural haven," she muses.
