Hollywood Celebrities Urge Continuation of Suicide Prevention Funding for LGBTQ+ Youth

Jun 3, 2025, 09:02

As influential figures in the entertainment industry, we hold a significant responsibility. Today, we must use our voices to advocate for the mental health and lives of LGBTQ+ youth. This is our clear duty, and we refuse to remain silent.

These powerful words initiate an open letter signed by over 100 Hollywood celebrities, including Pedro Pascal, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa, and Daniel Radcliffe. The letter's aim is to persuade the U.S. government to continue funding a federal program dedicated to suicide prevention services for the LGTBIQ+ community.

The organization behind this plea, The Trevor Project, released the letter on June 2nd. They implore the Trump Administration to safeguard $50 million in funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which provides round-the-clock support to LGBTQ+ youth.

The letter emerged after an April budget draft leak from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggested the potential removal of federal funding for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Such cuts would have dire and possibly fatal consequences for LGBTQ+ youth nationwide.

The open letter is also endorsed by other celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Sarah Paulson, Troye Sivan, and Cara Delevingne. It emphasizes that this issue transcends politics, highlighting the essential nature of providing aid to young individuals during their darkest times.

Jaymes Black, director of The Trevor Project, expressed gratitude for the backing from Hollywood stars. She acknowledged the disproportionate rejection, stigma, and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ youth, who often feel alienated in society.

The Trevor Project states that since its launch in 2022, the program has connected 1.3 million individuals with life-saving advisors. They underscore the alarming statistic that LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide compared to their heterosexual peers.

Additional resources for those experiencing suicidal thoughts include the 024 crisis line, the Teléfono de la Esperanza at 717 003 717, and the Fundación Anar's hotline for minors at 900 20 20 10.
