Authorities Resume Search for Madeleine McCann's Remains 18 Years After Her Disappearance
In a renewed effort to solve the mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann's disappearance, the Portuguese police have commenced a fresh search operation. The young British girl vanished at the tender age of three during a family vacation in the Algarve region back in 2007. This latest search, a collaborative effort with German authorities, is focused on Praia da Luz, her last known location, and aims to find her remains.
The Portuguese Judicial Police have announced, through a formal statement, their compliance with a European Investigation Order. This directive was issued by German authorities and approved by the Faro Prosecutor's Office in southern Portugal. The search encompasses a broad range of investigative activities, centered on specific search orders, taking place this week in the Lagos municipality, which includes Praia da Luz.
Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bedroom while her parents were dining nearby, and she would be 22 years old today. The Judicial Police have committed to handing over any seized evidence to the German Federal Criminal Police Service, following the national prosecutor's authorization.
Portuguese police clarified that the search warrant was issued by the Brunswick Prosecutor's Office, which is leading the preliminary investigation against Christian Brückner, the primary suspect in the German investigation. Despite being identified as the main suspect in 2020, Brückner has yet to face formal charges concerning Madeleine's case.
Christian Brückner, now 48, is currently serving a sentence for the 2005 assault of a U.S. tourist in southern Portugal. He was reportedly nearby when Madeleine disappeared, and a witness has alleged that Brückner confessed to the crime. However, authorities have not been able to gather enough evidence to formally accuse him.
This September, Brückner might be released from prison due to being acquitted of other charges related to sexual offenses. The judges concluded there was insufficient evidence to convict him, contrary to the prosecutor's demand for a 15-year sentence.
The prosecutor accused Brückner of stalking minors, indecent exposure, and the knife-point rape of an Irish woman, among other assaults documented in tapes that were never recovered.
