Navigating to University City Amid Line 6 Closure: A Guide to Alternative Transportation
This Monday marked the beginning of a significant public transport adjustment in Madrid, as the partial closure of Metro Line 6 commenced. The section between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro was shut down starting Saturday, prompting Metro de Madrid to bolster train services on Lines 2, 3, 5, and 10 by up to 21%. This enhancement aims to ensure smooth mobility for students attending the University Entrance Exams (PAU), with additional trains also running on the open segment of Line 6 between Moncloa and Legazpi.
The PAU exams, which last year saw participation from nearly 40,000 students in Madrid, are scheduled for June 3rd to 6th, with June 7th reserved for any conflicts or issues. The extraordinary session will occur on July 1st to 3rd, with July 4th similarly reserved. These dates coincide with the initial days of the western closure of Line 6, affecting a total of 15 stations between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro, effective from May 31st through September 12th.
In response, students have access to various transit alternatives, including the Special Replacement Service (SE6), a surface route connecting University City and Méndez Álvaro. From Méndez Álvaro or Pacífico, as well as other stations on the eastern arc of the line, students can reach University City via the segment that remains open (platform 1).
Additionally, from Moncloa station, passengers can continue to use Line 6, as that section remains operational, or opt for the university buses provided by EMT. From Legazpi station, one can travel directly to Moncloa via Metro Line 3, and then reconnect with either Metro or buses. The quickest route from Oporto involves taking Line 5 to Callao, then switching to Line 3 to Moncloa.
For those starting from Príncipe Pío, the most efficient option is to take Line 10 to Plaza de España, and then transfer to Line 3 to Moncloa.
Regarding bus services, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) has deployed an additional 224 buses for these routes. Specifically, for the Moncloa Campus, lines F, G, U, 82, and 132 will see increased service. Students heading to the Somosaguas Campus will benefit from enhanced service on lines A and H. Meanwhile, intercity buses connecting Madrid to the universities in Alcalá de Henares (line 227) and Cantoblanco Autonomous University (line 714), as well as Alcalá's L2 urban line, will maintain their regular winter weekday frequency.
Attention to the over 12,580 students preparing for the #PAU2025 at #LaComplutense! Starting May 31st, @metro_madrid will begin transforming Line 6 into the network's first automated line. Measures are being taken to mitigate any potential inconvenience...
