The Illusory Victory of Sheinbaum

Jun 3, 2025, 04:46

In the latest political spectacle, the ruling party has forsaken integrity for the sake of securing power, with their audacity now unfolding like an accordion. Despite failing to match the figures from the previous mandate revocation or replicate the popularity of last year's "most popular" leader, they have achieved a crucial milestone: the judicial takeover

Political events often require a skilled hand to harness them for a desired purpose. The regime’s inability to inspire and mobilize less than twelve percent of the electorate could have been a boon for the opposition—if there were a capable force ready to seize the opportunity presented by Morena's shortcomings.

As early electoral results were announced, Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the bitter outcomes as though they were sweets of victory. The reality appears irrelevant when one possesses the means and power to impose a favorable narrative, even when faced with results that highlight the complexity of the process and the weakness of their political strength.

Much like the ill-fated character at the White House last week, Morena grins despite the blow. The Obradorists attempt to mask the inadequacy of votes that challenge the regime's invincibility, the political sway of the president's popularity, and the supposed territorial dominance of this party-state.

Sunday was a bleak day for Morena and its allies. Yet, there is little reason for optimism. No lessons in democracy will be gleaned; no one within the ranks will reflect on the meager turnout as a consequence of electoral deceit, a punishment for state-run elections, or a rebuke for resembling the old PRI rather than the original left.

Internally, there may be disputes and blame, but publicly, the focus will remain on advancing their gains and further tarnishing the opposition's image, which failed to turn the meager turnout into a clear signal of public disapproval for the process's abuses, with days still left to count.

The phrase "they vote less because of them," employed by the president against the opposition, serves as a simplistic ploy to prevent traditional parties from mocking the scant millions of votes gathered. It's a new, delusional echo of "the PRI stole more," as logical as it is revealing of Morena's lack of political shame.

Critics of the regime repeatedly anticipate changes that will not come: nobody will resign. Morena will not scrutinize the actions of the namesake son of a patriot, nor will there be self-criticism about the so-called nation servers, as doing so would mean acknowledging legal violations and recognizing their defeatability.

As the days unfold and more ornaments fall from what the government tried to sell as a grand Christmas tree—laden with gifts for a new judicial power—it is crucial to emphasize that when the historic levels of annulment become evident, or judges arrive with a mere handful of votes, Morena will not correct course nor consider their strategy for the second half of the judicial election in 2027.
