Cristina Kirchner's Strategic Return: A Stand Against the Rising Right-Wing in Buenos Aires

Jun 3, 2025, 03:26

Amidst mounting political tensions, Cristina Kirchner emerges with a bold declaration: "The nation is in danger." The former Argentine president has announced her candidacy for a provincial deputy position in Buenos Aires, representing the Peronist party. This strategic maneuver aims to counteract the growing influence of far-right leader Javier Milei in the upcoming October elections, where Argentinians will choose national deputies and senators.

Kirchner's announcement reflects the underlying concern about the Peronist stronghold's performance in the provincial legislative elections. She underscores the crucial connection between provincial success and national outcomes, questioning the implications of potential failures on the entire country. Her message targets the fractured Peronist landscape, divided between those advocating her leadership in revitalizing the party and factions supporting Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof, once considered her political protégé.

Kirchner plans to campaign in La Matanza, a vast and populous district on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where the Peronists currently lead in polls. Despite facing a confirmed corruption conviction from her previous administrations, Kirchner's political reentry seems promising. Her extensive political career includes serving as a deputy in the 1990s, four-time senator, two-time president, and most recently, vice president under Alberto Fernández from 2019 to 2023. Fernández's administration, marked by poor management, inadvertently facilitated Milei's far-right rise, causing disarray among Peronists.

Buenos Aires remains the sole significant district under Peronist control following Milei's political surge in 2023. With 40% of the national census, maintaining control over this province is pivotal, with losing it equating to a political catastrophe. Kirchner anticipates that a setback in the legislative elections could foreshadow an even more bitter defeat in the 2027 presidential elections. Milei's far-right faction, confident in their strategy, has secured an electoral alliance with the Pro, the party of former President Mauricio Macri, in this critical district. While conceding defeat in La Matanza, Milei's coalition, La Libertad Avanza, anticipates victories across other provincial districts.

In her recent public appearance on May 25, Kirchner urged a restructuring of the Peronist party, advocating for a shift from a "present state" to an "efficient state" and questioning long-held economic policies like import substitution industrialization. During her candidacy announcement, Kirchner avoided self-criticism and focused her rhetoric against Milei, describing the far-right as an "anti-state, very cruel, somewhat esoteric" force. She alluded to Milei's sister, Karina Milei, known for her interest in tarot and currently serving as Secretary of the Presidency. Kirchner criticized Milei's focus on elite interests, likening it to past dictatorial eras, Menemism, and the Alliance, questioning its longevity with more hope than conviction.
