Marcelinho Huertas: The Unyielding Force Overwhelming Joventut

Jun 2, 2025, 21:33

In a season marked by fierce competition and exceptional talent, Marcelinho Huertas has cemented his position as a formidable force in the Liga Endesa. Despite the impressive performance of Ante Tomic, who led with the highest average rating of 20.9 compared to Huertas' 16.6, the ACB awarded the MVP title to Huertas. This decision sparked feelings of injustice within Joventut, yet Huertas' subsequent playoff performance appeared to validate the accolade. At 42 years old, Huertas displayed his unmatched ability to read the game and control the court, scoring 10 of the first 12 points for his team, leaving Joventut scrambling to keep pace.

After a brief respite marred by two turnovers, Huertas returned with renewed vigor, deftly exposing gaps in Joventut's defense and adding to his scoring tally. His presence on the court was electrifying, leaving Joventut struggling to respond effectively. Complemented by Shermadini's prowess in the post and Fitipaldo's exterior play, Huertas' commanding presence was momentarily disrupted by a collision with Dekker, but he quickly recovered to maintain Tenerife's narrow lead.

Despite finishing the regular season in third place, Tenerife faced a determined Joventut, who entered the playoffs with a strong streak and soaring confidence. However, even with contributions from Tomic, Dekker, and Hanga, Joventut could not surpass the strategic brilliance of Huertas, who orchestrated plays with precision while drawing inspiration from teammates like Abromaitis and Doordekamp. As the game progressed, it became evident that Huertas was the orchestrator of Tenerife's success, ensuring a 70-63 lead heading into the final quarter.

From the moment Huertas stepped onto the court, the outcome seemed predestined. Joventut's attempts to fight back, led by Dekker and Tomic, were ultimately futile against Huertas' masterclass performance. Fueled by a seemingly endless well of energy and strategic acumen, Huertas amassed 39 points, a remarkable feat that set new records in playoff history. His performance not only matched the CB Canarias playoff record but also shattered the record for players over 40, previously held by Creus with 23 points in 1997.

This extraordinary display left Joventut deflated, facing the daunting challenge of winning the next two games to remain in contention for the semifinals. Meanwhile, Marcelinho Huertas and Tenerife stand just one victory away from advancing, whether in Badalona or back on their home turf in Tenerife.
