Radio Madrid Celebrates a Century: A Journey of Legacy and Innovation

Jun 2, 2025, 21:01

Radio Madrid, a cornerstone of Spanish media, marks its 100th anniversary, standing on the brink of new opportunities. This milestone is a testament to the tireless efforts of those ensuring the station's daily broadcasts under the Cadena SER banner. Anticipating the official anniversary on June 17, Radio Madrid hosted a celebratory gala at Teatro Lope de Vega, orchestrated by comedian and broadcaster Juan Carlos Ortega. The event, aptly named "Everything Ahead," paid tribute to the station's centennial journey across Spain.

The gala commenced with an invitation from Radio Madrid's director, Javier García Beberide, to Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, to join him on stage. However, the audience reacted with disapproval, greeting the politician with boos and critical remarks. Despite the reception, the mayor commended the station's role in fostering democracy by respecting media as enshrined in the Constitution, a statement met with sarcastic laughter.

Other political figures in attendance, such as Miguel Ángel García Martín, Mónica García, Óscar López, and Francisco Martín, remained largely unnoticed among the crowd. The event also highlighted Radio Madrid's pivotal role during Spain's massive blackout, reminding attendees of how people once again turned to radios for information, illustrating the enduring importance of this medium.

Spanning a century, the station has chronicled significant historical moments—from the blackout, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 11M attacks, to iconic programs such as Teatro del Aire and the station's early commercials. The audience was taken on a nostalgic journey back to the days when Alfonso XIII inaugurated Unión Radio Madrid, the station's original name before joining Cadena SER, expressing his "deep satisfaction."

The gala's essence was humor, led by Juan Carlos Ortega, who proposed a role reversal, applauding the audience who filled the venue to engage directly with their cherished voices. Ortega's suggestion that listeners act as "local correspondents" was echoed by journalists Roberto Torija and Marta González Novo. Veteran broadcasters Ángeles Afuera and Carmelo Encinas also took to the stage, reminiscing about the radio's evolution alongside Spanish society.

Highlighting its recent recognition, the station recalled Queen Letizia's remarks during her visit to the Cuesta de Moyano, where she praised Radio Madrid's "youthful vigor," admitting she starts her mornings with the radio's sound rather than an alarm. The station also paid homage to late figures such as Carlos Llamas and Joaquín Luqui, who were instrumental in shaping its legacy, particularly through iconic shows like Los 40 Principales, which gained international acclaim.

As the gala concluded, attendees shared their excitement about witnessing the event firsthand. Listeners like Antonia, who tunes in primarily on weekends, expressed a longing for journalist Iñaki Gabilondo's presence, while others, like Julián and Concha, cherished the opportunity to connect with personalities they follow daily. Julián, in his 70s, proudly recounted his lifelong association with Radio Madrid, highlighting the station's enduring impact on its loyal audience.
