Valencia Basket Overpowers Gran Canaria with Dominant Third Quarter

Jun 2, 2025, 20:13

In the first playoff matchup for the title, Valencia Basket showcased their superiority with an undeniable victory against Dreamland Gran Canaria, finishing 98-74. The pivotal moment came in the third quarter when Pedro Martínez's squad went on a scoring spree, extending their lead to around 30 points, leaving Jaka Lakovic's team without answers. The second game of this series is scheduled for next Wednesday at 21:15 on the Canary court.

Jean Montero, in a state of perpetual brilliance, often ignites such strong scoring streaks that his teammates might unintentionally lower their intensity. The Cuban talent's ability to score 15 points in the first half can lead his teammates to forget to shoot. This was especially evident in the first quarter when Valencia Basket entered turbo mode, a familiar sight this season, opening a gap that widened to 12 points (25-13).

Gran Canaria, known for complicating this rival's plans—they were Valencia's nemesis in the Copa del Rey—remained unfazed and, with a more collective effort and fewer outside shots, began to close the gap. Mike Tobey, a former Valencia player, strengthened their inside game, allowing Lakovic's team to stay competitive by halftime (44-41).

However, Pedro Martínez knew his strategy well, and his team was capable of exploding in the third quarter. Within 77 seconds, they extended their lead with another pair of three-pointers and a layup (52-41). This was their formula, for better or worse. The Catalan coach also tasked Josep Puerto with containing the persistent Brussino, a key player for the Canaries.

The third quarter was destructive. Seven three-pointers fueled Valencia Basket, sealing the game with 34 points in this period while Gran Canaria struggled to counter the offensive onslaught, facing an insurmountable deficit (78-49) with ten minutes still on the clock.

With the game effectively decided, the final quarter turned into a celebration for the fans. All 12 Valencia players scored, further punishing Lakovic's team (85-49). With six minutes left, Pedro Martínez pulled Montero, who had scored 21 points in 21 minutes, to a standing ovation of "MVP!" chants. The fans rejoiced not only in this victory but also in the prospect of at least one more game at the Fonteta, the old venue set to be replaced by the dazzling Roig Arena after the season. The second battle awaits on Wednesday at 21:15 on Movistar+ in Gran Canaria.
