Feijóo Stands Firm on Amnesty's Unconstitutionality Despite Constitutional Court's Draft

Jun 2, 2025, 19:57

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Popular Party (PP), remains unwavering in his stance that the amnesty law is unconstitutional, despite a draft from the Constitutional Court suggesting otherwise. This court, the ultimate authority on constitutional matters, has yet to finalize its decision, but Feijóo continues to declare the law that pardoned Catalan separatists as legally unsound. At a gathering in Cáceres, he argued, "Today, some try to convince us that purchasing a government with privileges is lawful. I say no. It is neither ethical nor moral, and certainly not legal."

Feijóo is not alone in his conviction. The PP's national spokesperson, Borja Sémper, also condemned the amnesty as profoundly immoral, regardless of what the court might rule. "Whether constitutional or not, it remains a political bribe and an outrage," Sémper emphasized.

Cuca Gamarra, the PP's general secretary, noted the draft ruling as one of many reasons for Spaniards to rally against President Pedro Sánchez. She accused Sánchez of using the amnesty as a tool to secure his position and criticized parts of the government for targeting those pursuing justice, referencing alleged misconduct led by PSOE member Leire Díez.

"This is the essence of 'Sanchismo'," Gamarra asserted, urging citizens to mobilize for a decent government and a new direction for Spain. Although she refrained from discussing the draft's specifics due to lack of access, her call to action was clear.
