Sheinbaum on Judicial Election: "Everything Can Be Improved. Conclusions Will Be Drawn for 2027"
There was no surprise for the government: the judicial election was deemed an "exemplary success" and an "innovative process." Claudia Sheinbaum's administration defended the participation rate, which stood at just 13%. "It met expectations," stated Rosa Icela Rodríguez, the Secretary of Governance. The president elaborated further, comparing Sunday's turnout with the opposition's results in the 2024 elections: "They claim few participated, yet those who did outnumbered their voters from a year ago: 13 million people. Unprecedented. Impressive. Wonderful. Democratic. They bet people wouldn't show up, but more voted than for them." Despite this, Sheinbaum acknowledged, "Everything can be improved. It's the first election. Conclusions will be drawn for 2027," in response to journalist inquiries.
Sheinbaum dedicated her morning conference to celebrating what was a historic day for Morena. On Sunday, a new federal judicial power and local judicial power in 19 states were elected. Nearly 2,700 positions, including judges, magistrates, and ministers, are set to change. The day witnessed around 1,700 incidents but was generally peaceful. The complex voting process, involving six to nine ballots, caused confusion and doubt throughout the day. Though 100 million Mexicans were eligible, only 13 million participated, far below the over 20% turnout predicted by surveys.
The turnout figure hasn't deterred the Morena government, which continues to tout it as a success. The president made comparisons to enhance the 13% figure's significance: "I thought if the same number voted as in the first consultation exercise on former presidents, it would be great. It turns out it was double," Sheinbaum remarked, not mentioning that the former presidents' consultation in 2021, requested by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was non-binding with symbolic weight. However, the judicial election's consequences are as tangible as dismantling and rebuilding a judicial power.
On Monday, the president revisited tweets from opposition leaders labeling the event a fraud. Reading them mockingly, she then highlighted the 2024 presidential election results, marking their first anniversary: "Notice how many votes PAN received last year: 9.6 million. Notice PRI's votes: 5.7 million. So, fewer voted for them than in the judicial election, no wonder they're worried." This comparison omits that some voters in this judicial election aimed to nullify their votes or support independent candidates outside Morena.
Currently, participation is the sole known data from Sunday's event. According to government information, the INE will release the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation results this Monday; the Discipline Tribunal results on Wednesday; the Electoral Tribunal's upper chamber results on Thursday, and the regional chamber results on Friday. The new circuit magistrates will be announced on Sunday, and the circuit court judges' names will be revealed on Tuesday, June 10.
