Etna's Majestic Eruption Unfurls a Towering Smoke Plume Over Sicily

Jun 2, 2025, 14:05

Etna, the Sicilian volcano standing sentinel over the city of Catania, has once again asserted its formidable presence with a midday eruption. This event has unleashed a colossal smoke column soaring up to five kilometers, accompanied by a surge of lava flows. In light of these developments, the Italian Civil Protection Agency has issued a red alert, although the activity remains confined to the crater area, approximately 2,800 meters above sea level. The violent explosions of Europe's most active volcano, accompanied by intense tremors, have resonated across the surrounding municipalities.

While the dramatic images of the eruption have rapidly circulated on social media—thanks to the many tourists present at the volcano's base—the event has not yet impacted flights at Catania's airport. Typically, air traffic disruption is among the first casualties of Etna's frequent eruptions. However, the current wind direction has spared the terminal, allowing operations to continue unimpeded.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Catania has reported a probable collapse of part of the southeast crater wall, a site of frequent eruptions since its formation in 2007. This collapse has generated a pyroclastic flow, alongside the emergence of additional lava fountains across various locations. A minor stream of volcanic material has navigated toward the Leone Valley without breaching its confines, while another modest flow has descended into the Bove Valley. The tremors resulting from the eruption have reached "very high" levels, with an upward trend, according to the institute.

Enrico Tarantino, the mayor of Catania, reassured residents by stating, "I have just spoken with the Institute of Volcanology, and everything is normal and under control. There is no critical situation. This is a recurring phenomenon, and the volcano monitoring system had anticipated it, preventing access to summit areas. It's our mountain, and we know it well."
