María Ocaña's Departure: Queen's Secretary Steps Down for Personal Reasons

Jun 2, 2025, 11:09

The Royal Household faces a significant transition as María Ocaña, who has served as the secretary to Queen Letizia since April 2024, announces her resignation due to personal and familial obligations. This unexpected departure has left the Queen temporarily without her trusted confidante. According to insiders, Ocaña's decision stems from “unforeseen personal and family reasons,” causing a wave of sadness among the team at the Palacio de La Zarzuela and Queen Letizia herself, with whom Ocaña shares a deep rapport.

The Royal Household is currently in the process of evaluating potential candidates to fill Ocaña's position. However, the ultimate decision rests solely with Queen Letizia, and no final choice has been made yet. María Ocaña took over from General José Manuel de Zuleta y Alejandro just over a year ago, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold the position since the monarchy was reinstated. Her role involved overseeing all matters pertaining to the Queen's schedule and engagements.

Ocaña's appointment coincided with a period of renewal within the Royal Household, following the appointment of Camilo Villarino as the head of the House in January 2024, succeeding Jaime Alfonsín, who had served alongside King Felipe VI for 30 years, 20 of which were during his time as Prince of Asturias.

Ocaña's resignation will take effect at the end of July, although she is scheduled to accompany the Queen on her final official engagement on August 3. Post-resignation, Ocaña is expected to take a few months off and may potentially return to her previous role in the State Attorney's Office. Over the past 14 months, she has been a steadfast presence by Queen Letizia's side, offering guidance and support during almost every official function and preparatory meeting.
