Mazón Plans to Meet DANA Victims' Association in Ground Zero After Seven-Month Delay
In a significant move, the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has committed to engaging with the Association of Affected by the Dana Horta Sud, led by Christian Lesaec. This development, announced in Cheste, Valencia, marks Mazón's first direct interaction with a key victims' group in the flood-stricken regions where tragic events led to 228 casualties last October 29th. The meeting is set to take place at ground zero, underscoring the gravity and urgency of the issues at hand.
This decision follows the association's proactive efforts, alongside Asociación Víctimes DANA 29 Octubre and Associació Víctimes Mortals DANA 29-O, who first met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament Vice President Esteban González Pons in Brussels. Subsequently, they engaged with Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, highlighting the need for support and recognition at the highest levels.
Mazón, aiming to normalize this engagement, stated, “I have contacted the president of that association, having reached out previously, and we're discussing a meeting for this weekend. We are finalizing details with this and other associations, reaffirming our willingness to meet.” He emphasized that these groups will now participate in the Valencian Parliament's planned investigation commission. Notably, the initial list of 84 participants—approved by the PP and Vox—excluded any victims' associations, highlighting a significant oversight now being addressed.
The Association of Damaged by the Dana Horta Sud has extended an invitation for Mazón to visit one of the municipalities within the disaster's ground zero. This invitation is contingent upon the associations being included in the parliamentary investigation, ensuring their voices are integral to the inquiry. The association, through a widely-supported vote after a thorough three-hour meeting, reiterated its invitation to Mazón to engage directly at ground zero.
The association asserts, “This meeting will proceed once the victims' associations are officially listed as participants in the Cortes Valencianas' DANA investigation commission.” They have also called for media presence, pending further discussions with the Generalitat. Once Mazón's attendance is confirmed, the association plans to reconvene to refine the agenda and specific requests for the meeting, ensuring a focused and productive dialogue.
