Madrid Warns of Tick Bite Risks as Temperatures Rise
In a recent announcement, the Community of Madrid has highlighted the health risks associated with tick bites as temperatures soar. These arachnids, thriving in warmer climates, often target both wild and domestic animals, such as dogs, by feeding on their blood.
When humans are bitten by these arthropods, there is a potential risk of transmitting serious diseases like Borrelia, Lyme disease, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Rickettsiosis, or Anaplasmosis, as stated in a report by the regional government.
Given the warm weather, the Regional Forest Agents have outlined several precautions for those venturing into the countryside. These include wearing light-colored clothing to easily spot any ticks, donning long sleeves and pants, and opting for closed boots with socks to minimize skin exposure.
For those hiking, it is advisable to stick to the center of trails to avoid contact with vegetation, where these insects are more prevalent and to refrain from sitting in areas with dense plant growth. Additionally, the public is encouraged to use authorized insect repellents and to protect pets with anti-parasitic products.
When it comes to removing ticks from the body, it is recommended to use gloves or fine-tipped tweezers. The tick should be grasped as close to the skin as possible and pulled out perpendicularly, taking care not to twist, crush, or yank it harshly. The same procedure applies if these arachnids are found on pets.
After removing a tick, it's crucial to clean the area with soap. Should fever or skin rashes occur in the following days, seeking medical attention is advised. If the tick cannot be removed, a healthcare facility should be consulted. Traditional methods like dousing the tick with alcohol, oil, or petroleum are discouraged due to their ineffectiveness and potential harm.
The Community advises a thorough examination of the entire body, paying special attention to the armpits, groin, scalp, and navel, as well as checking children and pets. It is also recommended to wash clothing in hot water to ensure any remaining ticks are eliminated.
