Naval Team Defuses Mortar Shell on San Fernando Beach in Cádiz
A skilled team from the Spanish Navy successfully defused a 50-millimeter mortar shell discovered on Camposoto Beach in San Fernando, Cádiz. The operation was initiated after a concerned beachgoer reported spotting the explosive device near the fifth bridge in the area.
According to a statement by the Navy, the intervention took place on Saturday, May 31, conducted by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team from the Cádiz Diving Unit (UNBUDIZ). This unit is part of the Maritime Action Force, stationed at the Puntales Naval Base.
The mortar shell, identified as fully armed and dangerous, was deemed unsafe for transport. The specialized team neutralized it on-site using special charges, ensuring the safety perimeter was established. Following the successful defusal, the remains were collected, and the area was thoroughly inspected to prevent any environmental hazards or residues.
During the operation, experts from the National Police's Explosive Deactivation Technicians (TEDAX) and officers from San Fernando's National Police were present. They secured the area and maintained public safety throughout the procedure.
The Navy emphasized the potential danger of such projectiles, which may retain their explosive charge over time, posing significant risks. They urge the public to avoid handling any discovered explosives and to immediately notify the authorities.
The Navy's diving units are well-trained for both surface and underwater explosive interventions. Their personnel receive specialized training in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and underwater mine disarming techniques (EOD-Sub), making them uniquely qualified for these maritime tasks.
The Cádiz Diving Unit is a vital component of the Maritime Action Force (FAM), tasked with safeguarding national maritime interests and overseeing sovereign maritime spaces. They work collaboratively with other state civil organizations to provide comprehensive security.
