First Workday with Partial Closure of Madrid's Metro Line 6 Between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro
On Monday, the initial workday commenced with the partial shutdown of Metro Line 6 in Madrid, affecting the section between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro. In response, Metro de Madrid has bolstered train services by up to 21% across Lines 2, 3, 5, and 10. This increase is particularly targeted to support student transportation during the university entrance exams, known as Pruebas de Acceso a la Universidad (PAU). Additionally, more trains will operate on the open segment of Line 6 from Moncloa to Legazpi.
The PAU exams, which last year saw nearly 40,000 Madrid students participate, are scheduled for June 3rd to 6th, with June 7th reserved for any overlaps or issues. An extraordinary session will take place from July 1st to 3rd, with July 4th as a backup date. These exam periods coincide with the closure of the western arc of Line 6, stretching over 15 stations between Moncloa and Méndez Álvaro, from May 31st to September 12th.
To ensure students can navigate their routes, several alternatives are available, including the Special Replacement Service (SE6) that operates above ground between Ciudad Universitaria and Méndez Álvaro. From Méndez Álvaro or Pacífico, and other stations on the eastern arc of Line 6, access to Ciudad Universitaria remains open via platform 1. At Moncloa, both Line 6 and university buses from the EMT can be utilized. From Legazpi, a direct route to Moncloa is possible via Metro Line 3, with connections available to other Metro lines or buses. Oporto offers a quick link via Line 5 to Callao, then Line 3 to Moncloa. From Príncipe Pío, Line 10 to Plaza de España, and then Line 3 to Moncloa, provides an efficient journey.
In terms of bus services, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) has allocated an additional 224 buses for these routes. Lines F, G, U, 82, and 132 will have increased services for the Moncloa Campus, while lines A and H will see more buses for students heading to the Somosaguas Campus. Interurban buses, connecting Madrid with universities in Alcalá de Henares and the Autónoma of Cantoblanco, will maintain their usual winter frequency.
