Spain's Tourism Reaches New Heights During Record-breaking Easter

Jun 2, 2025, 08:13

The tourism industry in Spain has been thriving since 2023, consistently setting new records in terms of both visitor arrivals and their holiday expenditures. April 2025, coinciding with Easter, was no exception. This month saw an influx of 8.56 million foreign travelers to Spain's top tourist destinations, marking a 10% annual increase and breaking the 8 million visitor threshold for the first time as reported by the INE this morning. Consequently, Spain has celebrated its most successful Easter based on historical statistical records.

Furthermore, echoing the trends of the past two years, spending has outpaced tourist arrivals. This shift is viewed by Jordi Hereu, the Minister of Industry and Tourism, as pivotal in transitioning from a model focused on high visitor numbers to one that prioritizes economic contributions to Spain's coffers. In April, foreign traveler spending surged by 14.1%, reaching 10,826 million euros.

During the initial four months of the year, the number of tourists increased by 7.1%, totaling 25.6 million, while spending rose by 9.3% to 34,332 million euros. If this growth continues over the remaining eight months, especially considering the upcoming high season, Spain is on track to surpass 100 million travelers for the first time, potentially reaching 100.5 million, and breaking the 137,500 million spending barrier.

In terms of origin markets, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France remain the most significant contributors, accounting for 44.6% of arrivals. Leading the pack is the United Kingdom with over 4.7 million travelers, up by 6.7% compared to 2024; followed by France with 3.4 million travelers, increasing by 8.3%; and Germany with more than 3.3 million travelers, growing by 4.8%. These countries also lead in spending, with the UK at the forefront, contributing 1,768 million euros with 11.5% growth, closely followed by Germany at 1,602 million euros, a 14.4% increase, and France at 978 million euros, up by 14.7%.

These figures underscore Spain's reliance on these three major markets (UK, France, and Germany), which generate nearly half of all tourist arrivals (44%) and spending (40%). The average expenditure by British, French, and German tourists is on the lower end compared to other source countries. The average spend from UK visitors is 169 euros, 167 euros from Germans, and 128 euros from French travelers.

While comparable to other major European sources such as Italy or the Nordic countries, these amounts are significantly less than those spent by tourists from Asia or America, who typically have higher budgets and longer stays, often seeking diverse city experiences rather than just sun and beach. The average daily spend by American tourists is 274 euros, Mexican travelers spend 301 euros, and those from major Asian markets spend nearly 340 euros.
