Junqueras Views TC's Amnesty Proposal as a Step Towards Justice
The Catalan independence movement has received the Constitutional Court's draft opinion on the amnesty law with muted enthusiasm. The proposal affirms that the law aligns with the Constitution, sparking hope for justice restoration among supporters. Oriol Junqueras, leader of Esquerra Republicana, expressed in a message on X that this represents "a step further" in the journey to "restore justice," although he acknowledges the process is "excessively lengthy." Despite the law's approval over a year ago, resistance from certain judges persists.
"When a court wrongly labels the innocent as guilty, every effort must be made to restore justice. This marks another stride in a journey that's always too long," Junqueras stated in a message on the former Twitter platform. The republican leader eagerly awaits the lifting of his disqualification, which remains in effect due to the procés trial verdict. Until 2032, Junqueras is barred from candidacy and university teaching, his former profession.
The proposed ruling, soon to be deliberated by 10 TC members, counters most arguments from the PP's appeal. According to the draft accessed by this newspaper, the amnesty law fits within the Constitution, provided legislative freedom doesn't infringe on fundamental rights. The proposal supports the PP on only three minor points.
Junqueras' reference to the lengthy process resonates with Carles Puigdemont's situation, also awaiting amnesty. The current ruling, if passed, won't allow the Junts leader to return to Spain, as the TC must address Puigdemont's appeal regarding the non-application of amnesty for malversation. His case is queued behind 20 appeals against the amnesty law.
To date, the Sindicatura for Amnesty, part of Òmnium Cultural, reports a total of 35 amnesty requests denied, highlighting the ongoing struggle for justice.
