Impact of Spelling Errors on University Entrance Exam Scores

Jun 2, 2025, 06:53

In the realm of university entrance examinations, mastering the subjects is only part of the equation for success. A crucial factor that can significantly impact your score is the ability to write correctly, devoid of spelling errors. This year's guidelines for the University Access Tests (PAU) are explicit in how they address this matter.

For exams that involve essay writing, such as Philosophy, orthographic mistakes can lead to a deduction of up to 10% of the total score. This rule does not apply to subjects like Physics, which do not require extensive written compositions.

However, when it comes to language exams, whether it's Spanish, Catalan (or Valencian), Galician, or Basque, the potential penalty for spelling errors is even more severe, reaching up to 20%. This translates to a possible reduction of two points from the total score. Additionally, foreign language exams impose a penalty of 15% for similar errors.

This framework stems from an agreement reached by universities last autumn. According to the consensus, in language exams, including Spanish, co-official languages, and foreign languages, 10% of the score will depend on aspects like "coherence, cohesion, grammatical correctness, lexical accuracy, and orthographic precision," along with the presentation quality.

For other subjects, such as Spanish History or Philosophy, this rule applies strictly to orthographic errors in tasks requiring the "composition of a detailed text."

The university agreement regarding spelling in entrance exams also addresses the needs of students diagnosed with "dyslexia or dysorthographia or other disabilities impacting language development." This proportional application is seen as progress by student family associations, particularly for those with dyslexia, as it acknowledges their children's conditions during university entrance assessments.
