Night of Tragedy: The Portuguese's Violent Rampage at Torrejón Wedding
The night of November 6, 2022, marked a tragic turn at the wedding of Rubén and Sonia in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid. The celebration turned deadly when Micael Da Silva, known as The Portuguese, drove into the crowd, killing four attendees, including a minor and the groom's grandmother and uncle. The horrific event stemmed from a confrontation between families, leaving the exact cause unclear even after a prolonged judicial process with 126 witnesses.
As the clock neared midnight, Micael arrived at the wedding with his children and nephews, broadcasting live on social media. His activities were interrupted at 2:20 AM when the broadcast ceased, coinciding with the chaos that ensued. Micael fled the scene, later apprehended in Toledo. Earlier, the wedding atmosphere was festive, with guests dancing and drinking, Micael distinguishable by his bright orange cap.
A pivotal moment captured in a second video showed the groom's father exchanging words with Micael, leading to a tense departure from the venue. Witnesses speculated various causes for the discord, from indiscreet photographs to physical altercations, including an alleged theft of whiskey. The confrontation escalated as both families gathered outside, culminating in violence. Manuel Romero, the groom's father, claimed to have been physically assaulted, while Micael's relatives described being surrounded and attacked.
Amidst the confusion, wedding attendees began leaving, unaware of the brewing conflict outside. Micael and his group proceeded to their car, parked nearby, and drove into a crowd, resulting in fatalities and numerous injuries. The deceased included Juan Manuel Romero, a 69-year-old patriarch; Consuelo Bruno, the groom’s grandmother; Casiano Romero, the groom’s uncle; and 17-year-old Iván Mendoza. Surveillance footage and police reconstruction revealed the car's speed, reaching up to 62 kilometers per hour, leaving behind vehicle debris and biological evidence.
The police simulation centered on Consuelo Bruno's tragic death, using her biological remnants to understand the vehicle's path and impact. Emergency calls flooded in, portraying scenes akin to warfare, littered with broken glass and clothing. Despite mentions of a shooting, no firearms or casings were found, only discarded items, including Micael's orange cap and shoe.
By 3:30 AM, the Guardia Civil intercepted Micael and his children in a rural area of Seseña, Toledo. They were apprehended after attempting to flee, with a significant sum of money found in the car, believed to have belonged to Consuelo Bruno, part of the traditional wedding gift, "manzana." The investigation solely held Micael responsible for the tragedy.
Micael's defense argued his actions were driven by a state of shock, fearing for his life and his children's. He claimed attempts to warn the crowd were futile amidst the chaos. The prosecution demanded a severe penalty, with comparisons to a mass shooting due to the indiscriminate nature of the act. As the jury deliberates, the incident remains a stark reminder of the thin line between celebration and tragedy.
