Gukesh Triumphs Over Carlsen in a Surprising Turn of Events

Jun 1, 2025, 22:07

Perhaps one of the most significant defeats for the 34-year-old Norwegian chess icon, Magnus Carlsen, since he famously drew against Garry Kasparov at age 13 in Reykjavik, has unfolded. On Sunday, during the sixth round of this year's most challenging private tournament, Norway Chess in Stavanger, 19-year-old Indian prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh claimed his first win over Carlsen.

Previously, Carlsen had bested Gukesh with the white pieces during the tournament's opening round, breaking through the young player's resistance after four hours of intense battle. For Carlsen, it was crucial to reassert his dominance, despite stepping down from the world championship in 2022 due to the exhaustive preparation required for classical chess, which he finds less engaging than faster formats.

Despite his preference for rapid and freestyle formats, Carlsen enjoys the accelerated classical style of Norway Chess, where time pressure mounts around move 30, leading to potentially thrilling Armageddon tiebreakers. In this format, each draw is followed by a sudden-death game, adding to the excitement and challenge.

Carlsen's confidence was evident when he shared his thoughts on move 17, believing his position was strong. However, Gukesh's bold decision-making, reminiscent of his victory over a weakened Liren Ding, showcased his formidable calculation skills, honed in a computer-rich environment.

Initially, Carlsen seemed to have everything under control, opting for a gradual strategy to maintain his advantage. But Gukesh, feeling the pressure, chose to continue fighting despite contemplating resignation. His persistence paid off when Carlsen's optimism led to a critical oversight on move 44, which Gukesh capitalized on skillfully.

As Carlsen's position deteriorated, frustration culminated in a dramatic surrender, acknowledged by Gukesh, who understood the emotional weight of such intense competition. While Carlsen's reputation as a superior player remains intact, Gukesh's victory is a testament to his growing prowess.

The sixth round results were as follows: Erigaisi vs. Yi Wei ended in a draw, with white winning; Nakamura vs. Caruana also resulted in a draw; while Gukesh secured a 3-0 win against Carlsen. In the women's tournament, Khadem vs. Anna Muzychuk and Wenjun Ju vs. Tingjie Lei ended in draws, with the latter resulting in a win for white, while Vaishali faced off against Koneru.

The current standings show Carlsen and Caruana tied at 9.5 points, followed by Gukesh at 8.5. Nakamura and Erigaisi are tied at 7.5, and Yi Wei holds 6.5. In the women's tournament, Koneru and Anna Muzychuk lead with 9.5 points each, followed by Ju with 8.5, Vaishali with 8, and Khadem and Lei tied at 6.

The seventh round, scheduled for Monday at 5 PM local time, includes matches between Gukesh and Erigaisi, Carlsen and Nakamura, and Caruana and Yi Wei. The women's matches feature Wenjun Ju vs. Khadem, Tingjie Lei vs. Vaishali, and Koneru vs. Muzychuk.
