Global Housing Crisis: A Looming Threat to Homeownership

Jun 1, 2025, 22:07

Across the globe, over 1.6 billion people are grappling with inadequate housing conditions. This staggering figure prompts an urgent inquiry: Why is the dream of homeownership slipping further away for many, especially for the younger generations? As urban landscapes transform, these new groups are often confined to increasingly smaller apartments, marking a significant shift in living standards and expectations.

To delve deeper into these pressing issues, we engaged in insightful discussions with a panel of experts. Daniel Carvalho, a representative in Colombia's Chamber of Representatives; Sandra Forero, former president of the Colombian Chamber of Construction, Camacol; Luis Felipe Henao, the ex-Minister of Housing; Camilo Santamaría, an urbanist; and Guillermo Herrera, the executive president of Camacol, all contributed their perspectives on this multifaceted crisis.

These discussions reveal a complex tapestry of economic, social, and political factors that are reshaping the housing landscape, both in Colombia and worldwide. As we navigate these challenges, understanding the underlying causes and potential solutions becomes imperative for policymakers, developers, and residents alike.
