Elche Returns to La Liga After Two-Year Hiatus by Thrashing Deportivo
The Spanish Second Division, now known as Liga Hypermotion, is notorious for its unpredictable finishes, earning the nickname "Hypertension League" from fans. On this decisive Sunday, Elche, Oviedo, and Mirandés were all vying for the coveted direct promotion slot, a battle that followed Levante's thrilling comeback at Burgos's El Plantío last week. Meanwhile, Racing, Almería, and Granada contended for two playoff spots, with Racing and Granada facing off directly. Elche, however, eased their fans’ nerves early on and dashed their competitors' hopes with a commanding 0-4 win against Deportivo, sealing their return to La Liga after two years.
Elche arrived in A Coruña with one mission: reclaim a spot in the elite of Spanish football. Under Eder Sarabia's leadership, they knew their fate was in their own hands. Within just thirty minutes, they had secured their promotion with three goals. Mourad El Ghezouani struck first in the fourth minute.
For twenty minutes, Elche relentlessly pursued a second goal to ensure their lead. They found it when John Donald scored, bringing relief to their anxious supporters. Despite their advantage, the team didn’t retreat; Germán Valera sealed the match. The second half was a mere formality for Sarabia's squad, who had already clinched promotion but continued to dominate with Pedro Bigas adding a fourth goal. Eder Sarabia embraced his assistant Jon López, while the city of Elche erupted in celebration over their triumphant return to the top tier after a suspenseful final five matchdays.
In Oviedo, the team secured a victory against Cádiz in a match showcasing spectacular goals. Seoane scored first for the home side, followed by Diakité for Cádiz. Nacho Vidal then secured the win for the asturianos, earning them third place as they awaited an Elche slip-up that never came. Oviedo will face Almería in the promotion playoffs.
Similarly, Mirandés fulfilled their duty by defeating the league's bottom team in Cartagena, where their fans outnumbered the locals'. Lisci's squad took the lead through Izeta, countered by Alejandro Millán for Cartagena, but Joel Roca restored Mirandés' lead. As they hoped for a miracle in A Coruña, where Elche led 0-3, Álex Calvo sealed the 1-3 victory. Deportivo's comeback didn’t materialize, and Mirandés will face Racing in the playoffs.
In the playoff chase, each of the three teams controlled their destiny. Racing hosted Granada at El Sardinero in a direct encounter, while Almería played at home against already relegated Tenerife.
Racing needed only a draw against Granada to secure their playoff spot, but the match took an unexpected turn early on. Granada struck first through Rebbach, but Racing responded with an equalizer from Arana in the 10th minute. They saw two goals disallowed for offside, and before half-time, Carlos Neva was sent off for a last-man foul. Despite having the numerical advantage, Racing struggled to score until Sangalli netted a late goal, snatching the fifth position from Almería. José Alberto López's team will face Mirandés.
At UD Almería Stadium, Rubi's team knew a win would secure their playoff berth, which they achieved. Arnau Puigmal put Almería ahead with a lucky deflected goal. In the second half, Arribas clinched the 2-0 victory with a deft touch. Although Almería held the fifth position due to Racing and Granada's draw, a late Racing goal relegated them to sixth, setting up a showdown with Oviedo.
