Ayuso: "The Health Minister Enjoys Joints, I Prefer Fruits"

Jun 1, 2025, 16:31

In the brisk atmosphere of Berlin Park, a political gathering unfolded, with sparse attendance despite the heat. Isabel Díaz Ayuso and José Luis Martínez Almeida marked the midpoint of their term, celebrating their sweeping victories in Madrid's regional and city elections back in May 2023. Ayuso's triumph in traditionally left-leaning areas and Almeida's win across all city districts were historical feats.

Alfonso Serrano, the PP's secretary general in Madrid, urged supporters to occupy seats to avoid impressions of a deserted event, though many remained vacant. Despite the scorching midday heat, heavyweights from Madrid joined Alberto Núñez Feijóo as the event’s star attraction.

Both Almeida and Ayuso reviewed their administration's progress, directing sharp critiques at the national government. Almeida warned against complacency and called the current government disintegrating, vowing Madrid's refusal to yield to 'sanchismo'.

Ayuso's extended speech resembled an election rally, with written notes in hand. She labeled Sánchez an "autocrat," likened Spain to Venezuela, expressed support for the Guardia Civil, and criticized various national issues, including the politicization of Telefónica and judicial reforms. Her remarks struck a chord with attendees, stirring rare enthusiasm.

Humor lightened the event, as Almeida reassured Madrid's hoteliers about the upcoming influx of PP members for the July congress. Ayuso, in a jest targeting Health Minister Mónica García, contrasted her alleged drug trivialization with her preference for healthy living: "She likes joints, I prefer fruits. To each their own."

Ayuso captivated the crowd, who anticipated her like a rock star. Despite being a local favorite, she was the warm-up act for Feijóo, the primary speaker. Yet, the question lingered: "What’s happening between Genoa and the Madrid PP?" It wasn’t posed by critics but by Feijóo himself, declaring no internal issues, only challenges from the Moncloa.

This event underscored Ayuso's immunity among her followers during a challenging week, bolstering enthusiasm within her close team. Alfonso Serrano emerged as a key link between Genoa and Sol, entrusted by Feijóo to organize the congress. The gathering, wrapping up near two-thirty, showcased Madrid PP’s readiness for immediate elections, despite lingering empty chairs and the reality that tomorrow is just Monday.
