Durango's 2025 Elections: A Landmark Event with Expanded Judicial Voting
On Sunday, June 1, 2025, the state of Durango will host a pivotal electoral event, marked by its unprecedented scope and the inclusion of judicial elections for the first time. In addition to selecting local officials for municipalities, sindicaturas, and regidurías, citizens will cast votes for positions within the Judicial Branch, effectively increasing the total number of posts to be filled to 453. The Institute for Electoral and Citizen Participation (IEPC) has meticulously outlined the procedures, schedules, and logistical measures for this significant day.
A key highlight of this electoral process is the intensified security presence. The government has confirmed the deployment of hundreds of federal forces to bolster vigilance during the elections. "A significant federal force is arriving, including the National Guard. I believe this is the first time in Durango's history that such a large federal presence is seen. Approximately 600 troops are arriving and being distributed across 39 municipalities. We are working in joint coordination with all three levels of government to ensure comprehensive coverage throughout the state, allowing citizens to vote freely," stated Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal.
Election Date and Time
The elections in Durango are set for Sunday, June 1, 2025. The IEPC has confirmed that polling stations will open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m.
Positions Up for Election
These state elections in Durango are historic due to the sheer number of positions contested. Locally, citizens will elect a total of 404 positions: 39 municipal presidencies, 39 sindicaturas, and 326 regidurías. Additionally, 49 positions within the state's Judicial Branch will be contested, bringing the total number of public offices to be renewed to 453.
How to Locate Your Polling Station
As is customary, the INE has provided a portal for citizens to find the location of their designated polling station. To access this information, voters must locate the section number on their voting credential and select the entity where they are registered. In some instances, the system may also request the voter's key, which appears on the same credential. Additionally, each state offers a limited number of special polling stations for those in transit on election day. Their locations can be found by selecting the entity and the 'special polling station' option on the portal.
Ballots Provided
Each municipality will have its own ballot, colored olive green, for choosing local government positions. The IEPC has made available a website where voters can preview the candidates and participating political parties. Furthermore, four additional ballots will be distributed for the judicial elections: the pink ballot for Superior Court magistracies, the light blue for the Judicial Discipline Court, the green for the Juvenile Justice Court, and the orange for state judges.
Alcohol Ban (Ley Seca)
Similar to other states in the Republic, Durango will enforce a dry law, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages during the election period to ensure orderliness during the voting process. This restriction will be in effect from Saturday at 12:00 a.m. until Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
