Ukraine Strikes Russia's Air Force Ahead of Crucial Istanbul Talks

Jun 1, 2025, 13:18

In an unprecedented show of military capability, Ukraine has demonstrated its resolve by launching a massive drone assault on Russian airbases, marking the first such attack in Siberia. This operation comes as both nations prepare for critical peace talks in Istanbul, confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Belaya airbase in Siberia's Irkutsk region, approximately 5,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, was among the targets. Simultaneously, drones reached the Olenya Arctic base in Murmansk, roughly 1,800 kilometers north of Ukraine. The operation, reportedly executed using trucks to ferry drones near military sites, underscores Ukraine's strategic reach.

Ukrainian intelligence, through the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), claims a large-scale effort to debilitate Russia's strategic bombers deep within its borders. According to RBC-Ukraine, over 40 Russian aircraft, including an A-50 reconnaissance plane and Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, have been reportedly hit, though these figures remain unverified. This attack, estimated to cost Russia about 2 billion euros, poses a significant threat to its nuclear capabilities.

The Russian Defense Ministry has yet to disclose the extent of the damage. With around 60 Tu-95 bombers, each costing millions, the economic impact contrasts sharply with the relatively low cost of drones, which range from a few hundred to several thousand euros.

A Russian aviation-affiliated channel, FighterBomber, highlighted vulnerabilities in Russia's defenses, noting the drones' close-range deployment made interception by Pantsir guns or S-300 missiles improbable. This incursion raises concerns within the Kremlin about the conflict's expansion into Russian territory.

Governors from the affected regions, including Irkutsk's Igor Kobzev and Murmansk's Andrey Chibis, have urged calm among residents, discouraging the dissemination of defense system images. The pro-war channel WarGonzo lamented the drones' first incursion into Siberia, reflecting widespread unease.

Security-linked media outlet Mash described the attack as "massive," corroborated by eyewitness accounts of drones targeting military installations near Sredni and Novomaltinsk villages, accompanied by images of thick black smoke.

The Ukrainian military has also claimed strikes on military sites in Diaguilevo and Ivanovo, areas closer to Moscow. In Ryazan, Governor Pavel Malkov reported drone debris falling on a residential building, with preliminary data suggesting the objective was the Diaguilevo base, home to Tu-22 bombers.

This aggressive maneuver by Ukraine occurs less than a day before a scheduled meeting in Istanbul, aimed at negotiating a ceasefire. As President Zelensky articulates Ukraine's stance ahead of the talks, he emphasizes the nation's commitment to sovereignty and the defense of its people. Ukraine has demanded Russia present its negotiation terms, with the meeting set to feature familiar faces: Russian representative Vladimir Medinsky and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
