Valencian Funds Misinterpreted as State Aid: Merino Sets the Record Straight

Jun 1, 2025, 12:14

Ruth Merino, the Finance Minister for Valencia, firmly established her stance on Sunday regarding the financial advances from liquidations. She emphasized that these funds are inherent resources belonging to the Valencian community, derived from the regional financial system, and not to be mistaken as extraordinary aid from the central government.

Merino further elaborated that requests for these advances are positioned within the framework of the regional financial system and can be initiated by autonomous communities to address exceptional liquidity needs.

Her remarks came in response to statements by Diana Morant, Secretary General of the PSPV-PSOE, who claimed that the government has been supportive by transferring 1,000 million euros to the community, while accusing Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat, of failing to make payments and playing the victim.

Merino countered that both Morant and Pilar Bernabé, the Government Delegate in the community, have made declarations filled with falsehoods and half-truths, manipulating or even fabricating data.

"I urge them to abandon demagoguery and manipulation and to begin contributing genuinely to the recovery of this community, its citizens, and businesses," Merino stated.

She assured that the Generalitat will allocate 2,364 million euros of its own resources for reconstruction following the storm damage, resorting to debt as there are no grants from the central government.

Merino reiterated that the financial advances are resources belonging to Valencians, originating from the regional financial system, and not extra state aid.

She explained that the liquidation from the financial system is transferred two years after the settled fiscal year, meaning the corresponding liquidation for 2023, amounting to 2,000 million euros for Valencia, will be disbursed in July.
