Acrobatic Bulls and Equestrian Drama in Las Ventas

May 31, 2025, 21:02

The six bulls from Los Espartales seemed more fit for a high jump competition than a traditional rejoneo spectacle. Three bulls cleared the barriers impressively, with the sixth earning the gold as it leaped into the alley twice, showcasing extraordinary skill even after being hit with two rejones de castigo. An amazing feat indeed.

Sebastián Fernández, confirming his alternative, approached the first bull with poise, expecting a classic encounter. However, the bull was more intrigued by the fencing than the rider, effortlessly jumping over it and giving those behind it a fright they would not soon forget. Fortunately, no harm was done, but the scare was unforgettable.

The second bull hesitated, while the third, standing out among its peers, exhibited a steadiness and spirit absent in the others. The fourth sniffed at the boards but did not attempt the jump. The fifth, inspired by the first, ignored the horse entirely and effortlessly leaped into the alley. Then came the star, the sixth bull, named Malacara, who initially failed but, after a rejón, returned to the alley, surprising many with its agility and determination.

It was as if these bulls had been training for the high jump instead of roaming the pastures. Their performance left a lasting impression, though it posed a problem for the breeder, who had sent athletic jumpers instead of the spirited bulls expected to shine alongside the rejoneadores.

Diego Ventura almost exited through the Puerta Grande for the twentieth time in his career if not for his missed kill in the fourth round. His recent injury had clearly affected his performance, as he lacked his usual dominance and joy. Despite his skill, he faltered with the banderillas in the second and fourth rounds.

Accompanying him were young talents, Sebastián Fernández from Granada and Duarte Fernandes from Portugal. Fernández displayed expertise and elegance in riding but struggled with the kill, particularly with the evasive first and fifth bulls. His youthful zeal may have been his downfall, a sentiment echoed in Fernandes, who was dynamic yet rushed. In the sixth round, his horse Illusion suffered a goring, adding to the evening's drama.

It was the eleventh sold-out event of the San Isidro fair, a testament to the enduring allure of bullfighting, even when the bulls are more inclined to jump than fight. The spectators were treated to a unique and memorable performance from Los Espartales and the skilled rejoneadores who faced unexpected challenges.
