Morant Accuses Mazón of Deception over $1 Billion Government Aid to Pay Suppliers
In a recent statement made in Pego, Alicante, during the regional congress of PSPV-PSOE in Marina Alta, Diana Morant openly criticized Carlos Mazón for allegedly deceiving the Valencian people by concealing crucial financial support from the Spanish government. According to Morant, the government has extended a significant financial aid package totaling $1 billion in the first quarter of the year, aimed at covering debts to suppliers within the Valencian Community.
Morant highlighted a stark instance on May 22, when President Pedro Sánchez met with victims of the "dana" (a meteorological disaster) in Valencia. During this time, Mazón orchestrated a counter-meeting, portraying himself as a victim of the Spanish government's alleged inaction, despite the substantial financial aid already provided.
The controversy centers around a report from the State General Intervention Office (IGAE) released last Friday. This report reveals that the Spanish government had granted two separate advances of $500 million each, one by February and the other in March, culminating in a total of $1 billion in aid. This financial support was intended to be offset against the annual settlements distributed to regional governments in July. The aid represents a striking 62% increase compared to the funds allocated to the Consell during the same period in 2024.
Morant emphasized that the Valencian Community is the sole autonomous region that benefitted from such an advance, yet Mazón allegedly chose to obscure this fact from the public, thereby misleading them once more. Morant asserted, "He had $1 billion at his disposal to meet these economic obligations."
Moreover, Morant criticized Mazón and the Popular Party (PP) for their contradictory stance. She pointed out that, although they opposed the advance payments to autonomous communities in Madrid, they now demand the same funds they previously rejected.
In addition to financial criticism, Morant promised to restore the Cardiac Surgery Unit at the Hospital de la Ribera, which had been dismantled under Mazón's administration, affecting 100,000 individuals who now must travel to Valencia for such medical services. She made this announcement during her participation in the Ribera Baixa socialist congress, where Manoli Egea was elected as the regional secretary-general.
Morant concluded by asserting that the victims of the "dana" are not the only ones suffering under Mazón's administration. She underscored that communities like Ribera also endure cuts in education and healthcare, which she attributes to poor management under Mazón's leadership.
