Mazón Fortifies Leadership Amidst Political Challenges and Budget Alliances with Vox

May 31, 2025, 14:54

In a dramatic display of solidarity, approximately 900 members of the People's Party (PP) in Valencia erupted into applause, rallying behind Carlos Mazón, the President of the Generalitat. Despite being scrutinized for his controversial management and absence during the recent dana disaster, Mazón found refuge in the embrace of party loyalists. This event, characterized by affirmation and reinforcement, emerged in response to challenges posed by the party's old guard, notably represented by former president Francisco Camps, who is positioning himself as a potential successor. Compounding these dynamics is the recent approval of the budget, facilitated by votes from the far-right party, Vox, and the impending national congress called by national leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Mazón expressed profound gratitude, publicly acknowledging his friendship with Vicent Mompó, a key figure in the PP and organizer of the event held in Náquera, the only Valencian municipality governed by Vox. This acknowledgment underscores Mazón's appreciation for the strategic support from the far-right faction. Mompó, expressing delight at the presence of Carmen Fúnez, the national PP's deputy secretary of organization, dismissed concerns about Mazón's political future, emphasizing a focus on pragmatic governance over political warfare.

Mompó emerged as a pivotal figure, symbolizing the positive face of PP leadership during the dana. As the president of the provincial corporation, Mompó demonstrated responsiveness by altering his schedule to address the needs of affected communities, unlike Mazón, whose absence until late in the day has been a point of contention. This absence was highlighted by the delayed and inadequate public emergency alert, criticized by Judge Nuria Ruiz Tobarra for its failure to provide life-saving guidance, a lapse that coincided with numerous fatalities.

Supported by key advisors and allies like Juanfran Pérez Llorca, Mazón seized the opportunity to criticize the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez while lauding his administration's accomplishments midway through its term. He emphasized the PP's commitment to the needs of the Valencian Community, contrasting it with what he described as Sánchez's neglect and stranglehold over the region. Mazón proudly cited reductions in dependency waitlists and healthcare priority queues, as well as fiscal reforms aimed at alleviating economic burdens on citizens.

Highlighting employment achievements, Mazón reproached Sánchez for poor governance and financial neglect, particularly regarding the delayed extraordinary FLA payment, which hampers timely payments to suppliers. He claimed the Generalitat had disbursed 50% of direct aid to dana victims, contrasting sharply with the government's 17%, though these figures remain contentious and difficult to verify.

In response, Diana Morant, General Secretary of PSPV-PSOE and Minister of Science, accused Mazón of misleading the Valencian public. She revealed that the Spanish government had twice rescued the region with a 1,000 million euro advance to settle debts with suppliers, a fact she says Mazón conveniently omits. Morant pointed to a recent report from the General Intervention of the State Administration, highlighting these advances as unique to the Valencian Community, further intensifying the political discourse.
