Tragic Incident in Burela: One Dead and Five Still Hospitalized
In the town of Burela, located in Lugo, a tragic accident unfolded last Friday. One of the individuals who was hospitalized after a massive collision has tragically passed away. Meanwhile, five others continue to receive medical care, with two having been discharged, as reported by health authorities. The incident was caused by an elderly driver.
The accident occurred during the town's annual celebration, where members from the Eu Son Foundation, dedicated to supporting those with intellectual disabilities, were posing for photographs near the bumper cars. These rides were part of the festivities marking the start of the patron saint celebrations. Shockingly, eight individuals were struck when the driver lost control of his vehicle. Two of the victims were discharged on the same day.
Prior to the confirmation of the fatality, the town's mayor, Carmela Rodríguez, affirmed that the festivities would continue, emphasizing the importance to those whose livelihood depends on these events and the local residents. The town is known for its significant fishing port, which is one of Galicia's most essential. She communicated her condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate event, emphasizing the necessity to uphold the celebrations for the welfare of the community.
The elderly driver, reportedly in his eighties, was tested for alcohol and drugs, with results showing negative. He appeared disoriented and was in shock, requiring medical attention himself. Investigators have detailed these findings, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a heartfelt message, Mayor Carmela López, representing the town of approximately 10,000 residents, reiterated that the patron saint festivities would not be canceled, stressing the impact on families economically tied to these events.
