Israel Intensifies Dismantling of Gaza's Healthcare System by Forcing Closure of Northern Enclave's Last Hospital

May 31, 2025, 03:44

The healthcare system in Gaza faces unprecedented challenges as the Israeli military enforces the evacuation and closure of Al Awda Hospital, the final functioning medical facility in the northern sector of the enclave. This strategic maneuver forms part of a broader campaign by the government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to clear the area of residents. The forced departure of doctors and patients comes after a 14-day siege and bombardment of the hospital, culminating in an ultimatum delivered by Israeli forces threatening lethal consequences should evacuation not occur.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning regarding the closure of the hospital located in Yabalia, highlighting the loss of a "vital" healthcare resource for the population in northern Gaza. The comprehensive impact of these actions is severe, with WHO data indicating that 94% of Gaza's hospitals have suffered damage or destruction due to the ongoing Israeli offensive launched in October 2023.

Coinciding with the hospital's closure were new evacuation orders affecting the region. Avichay Adraee, spokesperson for the Israeli army, announced on social media the designation of parts of northern Gaza, including Yabalia, as combat zones due to alleged terrorist activities. These measures are part of Israel's broader strategy to depopulate northern Gaza, a region previously subjected to months of evacuations during the conflict, with limited resident return permitted earlier this year.

Amidst these developments, a food distribution initiative supported by Israel and the United States has been established in southern Gaza, prompting thousands to travel significant distances for sustenance. Humanitarian organizations criticize this initiative as lacking neutrality, asserting it serves Israeli military objectives.

On May 19, Israeli leaders launched Operation Gideon's Chariots, openly stating objectives of "occupation" and "destruction" within the territory. Reports from the Times of Israel suggest plans by Israeli Defense Forces to control 75% of Gaza in the coming months.

Dr. Mohamed Salha, director of Al Awda Hospital, recounts the dire situation faced as Israeli forces demanded evacuation. Despite repeated orders, Dr. Salha and his team resisted moving critically ill patients and shutting down the last medical stronghold in northern Gaza. He describes failed attempts to negotiate, including a proposal to remain in the hospital with a team to care for patients, which was rejected amidst ongoing bombardments.

Ultimately, the hospital staff evacuated under duress, with the WHO denouncing attacks on healthcare facilities. Images released show medical personnel carrying patients on foot due to the destruction preventing ambulance access. Prior missions by WHO involved relocating medical staff and patients amid increasing hostility.

This marks the first cessation of operations at Al Awda Hospital since the conflict's escalation in October 2023. Dr. Salha details continuous service provided during 600 days of Israeli offensives, despite frequent direct assaults. He reports 28 attacks on the hospital, resulting in fatalities and injuries among the medical team, along with sniper threats necessitating cautious movement within the facility.

Dr. Salha, leading Al Awda Hospital throughout the conflict, emphasizes the broader implications of targeting healthcare infrastructure. He notes the detrimental impact on medical personnel availability, including specialized surgeons, due to Israeli actions. "The assault on healthcare is a calculated strategy to undermine life in the region," he asserts, emphasizing the essential role of medical services in sustaining the community.
