Guardia Civil Leadership Unites in Support Amid Political Controversy

May 30, 2025, 18:38

In a decisive move to reinforce internal solidarity, Mercedes González, the Director General of the Guardia Civil, convened a meeting with key figures involved in anti-corruption investigations impacting the Spanish government. On Thursday, González met with Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Balas, who spearheads these critical operations, and his superior, Colonel Rafael Yuste, head of the Central Operational Unit (UCO). This gathering aimed to publicly affirm support for their efforts following recent reports of alleged schemes against Balas, as revealed by elDiario.es and confirmed by sources within the armed institute.

The meeting was attended by several top-ranking officials, including the second-in-command of the Guardia Civil, General Manuel Llamas, and the leader of the Judicial Police groups, General Alfonso López Malo—who previously oversaw the UCO. The presence of these figures underscored the high-level backing for the unit's ongoing investigations.

Sources familiar with the proceedings indicated that González was driven by a need to visibly demonstrate her support for the UCO, especially after facing criticism from professional associations for her silence. She insisted on a face-to-face meeting involving the Guardia Civil's leadership. General López Malo, though initially unavailable due to travel commitments, managed to attend upon his return that Thursday, highlighting the significance of the assembly.
