Taylor Swift Secures Absolute Control Over Her Early Discography
Taylor Swift has masterfully reclaimed the rights to the recordings of her first six albums, a move that grants her unprecedented control over her entire body of work. "All the music I've created now belongs to me," Swift expressed in a heartfelt letter shared on her website, marking this pivotal purchase. The albums, initially signed away to Big Machine Records at the tender age of 15, were later sold in 2019 to music executive Scooter Braun. Though Swift refrained from disclosing the financial details of this acquisition, she confidently stated that the price was "fair."
Since this loss, which she dubbed as "the worst-case scenario," Swift embarked on a relentless legal and cultural campaign to reclaim the control of her music. Announcing her intention to re-record her albums under her own terms, she sought to regain creative and economic sovereignty over her work. This led to the birth of the immensely successful "Taylor’s Version," which evolved into both a commercial triumph and a potent symbolic movement. Between 2021 and 2023, Swift meticulously re-recorded her albums Fearless (originally released in 2008), Red (2012), Speak Now (2010), and 1989 (2014).
This revitalized catalog was showcased during her global "The Eras Tour," spanning 2023 to 2024, including a memorable stop in Madrid last May. The tour broke records by generating over $1 billion (approximately €900 million), eventually surpassing the $2 billion mark (more than €1.9 billion) in total revenue. "The passionate support you've shown for these albums and the success story you've crafted with The Eras Tour is why I've been able to reacquire my work. I cannot thank you enough for aiding me in reuniting with the art to which I've devoted my life," Swift conveyed to her fans through her letter.
