US Supreme Court Ends Humanitarian Parole for Migrants

May 30, 2025, 15:26

The US Supreme Court has given the green light for the government to terminate the humanitarian parole program, which provided temporary residency to half a million migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela. This move responds to an urgent request from the Trump Administration, leaving beneficiaries unprotected from deportation.

Progressive justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor opposed the decision, cautioning that the majority overlooked the "devastating consequences" for those who legally resided in the country.

The humanitarian parole was crafted by the Biden Administration to curb illegal entries and provide refuge to migrants escaping dire conditions. Beneficiaries needed a sponsor in the United States to gain entry.
