Man Fatally Assaulted with a Homemade Gun in León Altercation
In the town of Bembibre, León, with its 8,158 residents, a 63-year-old man has been detained following the fatal attack on a 72-year-old man, with whom he had previous disagreements. The suspect employed a homemade firearm to bludgeon the victim during a confrontation at the town center this past Friday afternoon.
Moreover, the accused injured a 60-year-old passerby, who attempted to intervene in the fight, with a gunshot. This individual had to be hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries. The homemade weapon malfunctioned during the shooting, causing injuries to the gunman himself.
The Civil Guard of León disclosed that the two involved had a longstanding "personal dispute" and verified that the deceased succumbed to head injuries inflicted by the makeshift firearm carried by the arrested individual.
The incident unfolded at the heart of Bembibre, just before noon. The two disputants were engaged in a heated argument at Santa Bárbara plaza when the older man pulled out a handcrafted revolver and repeatedly struck his opponent's head, leading to the latter's demise.
The weapon discharged when another person in the vicinity approached to diffuse the confrontation. The gunshot inflicted severe leg injuries on this mediator.
The assailant also suffered injuries during the altercation as the improvised firearm exploded, wounding his right hand.
The Civil Guard quickly responded to the scene, arresting the sexagenarian and summoning emergency medical services to attend to both the apprehended and the unfortunate mediator. Both were taken to El Bierzo hospital in Ponferrada for treatment.
