Judge Questions Who Authorized the Delayed Alert for the DANA Catastrophe

May 30, 2025, 14:22

The judge from Catarroja, Valencia, Nuria Ruiz Tobarra, is intensifying her investigation into the delayed mass alert sent by the Generalitat on October 29th. This alert was intended to inform the public about the severity of the DANA disaster. Judge Ruiz Tobarra has requested information from the Emergency Department about the employees responsible for drafting and authorizing the message, which reached phones at 8:11 PM, by which time fatalities, missing persons, and individuals trapped in ground floors and garages had already accumulated. She believes that if the alert had been sent sooner and with clearer instructions, lives could have been saved. In total, the DANA disaster resulted in 228 deaths and widespread destruction in Valencia province.

Following a request from the political party Ciudadanos, acting as a popular accuser in the case, the judge has also asked the Generalitat to clarify the training of these employees and identify those who worked during the tragic day.

This scrutiny follows the testimony of Miguel M., the head of Emergencies who approved the mobile alert. He testified that the Generalitat considered sending the alert at 6:36 PM, over an hour and a half before it was actually dispatched, based on a suggestion by Jorge Suárez, the regional deputy director of Emergencies. This statement conflicts with former Justice and Interior Minister Salomé Pradas, who testified that the alert was only considered after 7:00 PM.

Once again, the judge has refused to request data from the mobile phones of the two former high-ranking Generalitat officials implicated in the case: Pradas and her then-deputy, Emilio Argüeso. This was a demand made by the Acció Popular del País Valencià, another popular accuser in the investigation.
