Judiciary Confirms Death of Last Missing Victim from Devastating Flood
Seven months following the disastrous flood in Valencia, the last of three missing individuals has been officially declared dead by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV). This confirmation raises the total number of deaths to 228. Over recent months, judicial authorities in Valencia, Picassent, and Requena have systematically resolved to acknowledge the deaths of the victims who had remained untraceable, as stated by the same sources.
In the aftermath of the flood, which occurred three months prior, state security forces prioritized the location of three individuals: José Javier from Pedralba, who was with his daughter when the flood struck and whose body was found; Elisabeth, who vanished in Chiva; and Francisco, a grandfather who valiantly protected his two grandchildren by placing them on a car roof before being swept away in Monserrat. By January, the Civil Guard informed the press that the likelihood of recovering these victims alive was virtually nonexistent.
The official declaration of the last missing person as deceased has led to the dissolution of the Data Integration Center (CID), established in Valencia on the day of the tragic event, October 29. The center had documented that the flood claimed the lives of 136 men and 91 women. To identify the deceased, authorities compared fingerprints from 171 bodies and conducted DNA testing on 48 samples. Numerous officers from the National Police and the Civil Guard, along with experts from the Legal Medicine Institute, were involved in these extensive identification efforts.
