La Primitiva: A Historical and Modern Guide to Spain's Beloved Lottery

Jun 16, 10:42

The rich history of La Primitiva dates back to 1763, originating under the moniker “lotería por números.” Despite its cancellation, this traditional lottery made a triumphant return in 1985, adopting its current name while maintaining the classic essence that players have cherished.

Prizes in La Primitiva are categorized, requiring participants to match at least three numbers, with the top-tier prize demanding the correct prediction of six numbers plus a bonus number known as the "reintegro." The value of prizes in each category is approximate, as it fluctuates based on the total amount of money collected and the number of winners in each draw.

La Primitiva draws are a thrice-weekly event, occurring every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, starting at 9:40 PM local time. Following the draw, players can verify their luck by visiting the official Loterías website or through the EL PAÍS website.

An additional game, the Joker, was introduced in 2012 to complement La Primitiva. To participate, players pay an extra euro for a randomly assigned number. If this number matches the winning sequence exactly, participants stand a chance to win up to one million euros.

It's important to note that EL PAÍS disclaims responsibility for any potential errors or omissions. The only official and valid list of results is provided by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado.
