Morante de la Puebla Reflects on Magical Performance at San Isidro Fair
José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, a seasoned bullfighter with nearly 28 years in the arena, reflects on his recent performance at the San Isidro Fair, claiming it to be his finest at Las Ventas, filled with enchantment.
Speaking from Cáceres, where he is slated to appear on Friday, Morante expresses a modest belief that the performance was historic. He describes the event as a moment of slow-paced elegance that captivated the audience and created a rare silence in the bustling arena of Las Ventas.
Morante recalls the bull's distinctive behavior, noting its varied movements. At one point, he felt transported back to the era of renowned bullfighter Antoñete, with the crowd deeply engaged in the spectacle.
The applause as he entered the arena caught him by surprise, initially assuming it was for another bullfighter, Talavante. Ultimately, it was a shared moment of recognition among all three bullfighters present.
The performance was a showcase of harmony and creativity, leaving an indelible mark on those in attendance. Nevertheless, controversy arose when the president declined to award the bullfighter an ear.
Morante downplays the incident, emphasizing his disappointment over the bull's delayed response to the sword rather than the president's decision. He opted not to take a lap of honor, viewing it as unnecessary given the significance of the performance itself.
Despite the setback, Morante left the arena content, aware of his achievement. He looks forward to Sunday's event at Las Ventas, hopeful for a warm reception.
In response to the prospect of exiting through the Grande Gate, Morante expresses a desire for such a moment, acknowledging that triumphs are not his sole focus but would cherish the memory.
Recalling a daring intervention to protect a fellow bullfighter, Morante humorously notes his ability to handle the situation without spilling his drink.
Regarding his health, Morante shares he is recovering, continuing to persevere through challenges.
In recognition of his exceptional performance and bravery, the Madrid Press Association awarded Morante the Golden Ear, a testament to his prowess and valor.
Ignacio Sanjuán, the event's president, faced criticism for his decision not to grant the ear, although he maintains his criteria regarding sword performance remains consistent.
