Former Officials Under Investigation in Madrid's Nursing Home Tragedy During COVID-19 Pandemic

May 30, 2025, 07:58

A court in Leganés, Madrid, identified as Court No. 6, has initiated a second judicial investigation concerning former high-ranking officials from Isabel Díaz Ayuso's administration. These officials are directly involved in the management of nursing homes during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic within the Community of Madrid, as reported by Marea de Residencias.

Previously, on March 26, the declaration of the three Ayuso government officials was suspended in another case concerning nursing homes. This case was opened at Court No. 3 of Plaza de Castilla in Madrid due to procedural issues, specifically the lack of complete case information. The three individuals involved were Carlos Mur, who signed the controversial protocols, Javier Martínez Peromingo, the geriatrician responsible for drafting these guidelines, and Antonio Burgueño, a health advisor.

In this second case, Alberto Reyero, the former Social Policies minister who highlighted the discrimination faced by residents from the onset of the pandemic, is scheduled to testify on June 3. On the same day, testimonies will be heard from Juan Abarca Cidón, president of HM Hospitales, and Antonio Burgueño, who was appointed in March 2020 as Ayuso's "chief advisor" in the fight against the pandemic.

The association has confirmed that Carlos Mur and Francisco Javier Martínez Peromingo, along with Pablo Busca, the former director of SUMMA 112, and the liaison geriatrician from Hospital Severo Ochoa, have been formally charged in the proceedings.
