Time Adjustment in Madrid: Celebrating the Canary Islands
In a unique move to honor the Day of the Canary Islands on May 30th, the iconic clock at Puerta del Sol in Madrid will turn back time by an hour this Friday, embracing the time zone of the Canary Islands from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. This symbolic gesture of unity will be accompanied by the display of the Canary flag on the Real Casa de Correos facade.
Miguel Ángel García Martín, the regional minister of Presidency, Justice, and Local Administration, joined forces with Alfonso Cabello and Ángel Sabroso from the Canary Government to explore the historic clock, a witness to Madrid's history since 1866. García Martín expressed that this is a heartfelt tribute to the 120,000 Canary residents who have become a beloved part of Madrid.
The Canary vice-councilor praised this initiative, noting it brings the Canary Islands closer to Madrid and the mainland. He emphasized that all of Madrid will experience a touch of Canary culture tomorrow. The Day of the Canary Islands marks the anniversary of the first session of the Canary Parliament in 1983, following the autonomy statute's approval in 1982.
Previously, on March 26, the clock was metaphorically paused for maintenance, a rare occurrence since 1996. After a brief restoration, the clock resumed its usual operations in April, ensuring its continued role as a timeless symbol of Madrid.
