Severe Injury from Falling Tree Branch Highlights Urban Safety Concerns in Carabanchel
This past Friday, a young man aged 25 sustained severe injuries when a tree branch fell on him in San Vicente de Paul Plaza, located in the Carabanchel district of Madrid. Responding swiftly, the Samur-Civil Protection team provided immediate care, stabilized him, and transported him in critical condition to the Clínico Hospital.
The incident occurred just before midnight when emergency services received a distress call, according to reports from Emergencias Madrid. The victim was seated on a bench in the plaza when a large tree branch unexpectedly fell, resulting in serious head trauma and a potential left hip dislocation. He was promptly intubated and transferred to the hospital in grave condition.
Local police escorted the medical convoy, while firefighters from Madrid's municipal services worked to section the fallen branch and secure the tree. Notably, this incident marks the first severe tree-related accident in Madrid in over a year and a half.
The last major incident occurred in November 2023, when a 23-year-old woman tragically died after a tree collapsed on a pedestrian crossing during the intense storm Ciarán. The tree measured 20 meters in height, with a circumference of one and a half meters, weighing between 2,000 and 2,500 kilograms.
In 2018, a four-year-old boy lost his life in Retiro Park due to a tree collapse, despite previous inspections by city technicians. The tree had been checked recently, and technicians had ordered the park's closure 40 minutes prior due to strong winds, prompting stricter protocols for park closures in adverse weather conditions.
Earlier, in September 2014, a 72-year-old man died after being struck by a falling branch while walking along Virgen de las Viñas Street in Villa de Vallecas. Just three months prior, a 38-year-old man was killed by a 400-kilogram branch while playing with his children in Retiro Park. According to city officials, the tree, a false acacia, was deemed healthy but had experienced a moisture imbalance and heat shock.
