Knicks Triumph at Madison Square Garden to Narrow Gap with Pacers

May 30, 2025, 02:54

The Knicks finally broke their streak of missing the Eastern Conference finals after 25 long years. Despite losing their first two home games at the iconic Madison Square Garden, the New York team, led by Jalen Brunson, secured a clear win (111-94) against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, thrilling their fans. This victory puts them at 2-3 in the best-of-seven series. Their next major challenge is a critical game in Indianapolis this Saturday, which is another must-win for the Knicks.

Brunson set the tone early, scoring two baskets in the opening minute, and the Knicks maintained the lead throughout the game. The haunting memory of the first game, where the Pacers overcame a 14-point deficit in the last 2:40 minutes to force overtime and claim victory, lingered in the Garden. This time, though, the Pacers couldn't pull off another miracle.

The Knicks ended the first quarter with a 27-23 lead and extended their advantage to a comfortable 56-45 by halftime. It was during the third quarter that they widened the gap further, entering the final phase with a 17-point lead (90-73), which had peaked at 22 points at one stage. In the first game, the Pacers managed to erase a 17-point lead in just six and a half minutes, so tensions were high when the gap shrank to 12 points with 8:15 remaining.

However, the Knicks quickly increased their lead again, rendering any comeback by the Pacers impossible despite their persistent efforts. Haliburton was benched for the remainder, and the game concluded with the most significant margin seen in the series to date (111-94).

Coach Rick Carlisle kept his star player, Tyrese Haliburton, on the bench longer than usual, possibly strategizing for Saturday's matchup. After a stellar performance on Tuesday with a triple-double and no turnovers, Haliburton was off his game, scoring only eight points. Rookie Bennedict Mathurin, who showcased his talent in the series' fourth game, emerged as the Pacers' top scorer from the bench, adding 23 points in 25 minutes.

On the Knicks' side, Brunson delivered an outstanding performance with 32 points, five rebounds, and five assists, along with impressive accuracy in field goals and three-pointers. Karl-Anthony Towns supported him with 24 points and 12 rebounds. They became the first duo since Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant to each score over 20 points in each of the first five games of a conference final.

The Knicks' victory keeps the Eastern Conference finals alive. Statistics show that it's rare for a team to overturn a 1-3 deficit in a seven-game series, but New York is determined to challenge history after 25 years of waiting for an NBA final appearance. They've proven in the third game that they can win in Indiana, though it required an unstoppable streak from Towns.

The Oklahoma City Thunder, who defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games in the Western Conference finals, await the winner and are favored to claim the title. Whoever wins the Larry O’Brien trophy this year will become the seventh different NBA champion in seven seasons.
