Gukesh Triumphs Over Caruana in Norway Chess Tournament on His 19th Birthday
In the vibrant city of Stavanger, Norway, the young chess prodigies are making waves at the Norway Chess tournament. Among them, the Indian sensation Dommaraju Gukesh, celebrating his 19th birthday, and China's Yi Wei, 25, showcased their brilliance by defeating American chess giants Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura in sudden death matches.
Magnus Carlsen, Norway's pride and top-ranked player, comfortably overcame India's Arjun Erigaisi after a fierce four-hour contest. Carlsen now enjoys a solitary lead after four of the anticipated ten rounds, as the tournament follows a double round-robin format among six participants.
The team from Dominicas de Oviedo school, victorious in the 'Little Giants' tournament, had the honor of making the opening moves on all six boards. Gukesh reflected on his success, stating, "Until today, my chess was decent, but my time management was poor. Today, I managed the clock well, which was key to my victory."
Gukesh's victory was a testament to his strategic prowess, managing to draw Caruana despite the latter's advantage with black pieces. In the subsequent Armageddon match, Gukesh decisively claimed victory, showcasing his mastery in the high-pressure setting.
Carlsen's match against Erigaisi was marked by his visits to the 'confessional', sharing his confidence with online viewers. Yet, expert analysis suggested Erigaisi had chances for a draw with precise moves, though the fourth hour proved insurmountable for him.
Nakamura's optimism bordered on arrogance, playing without ambition despite having the white pieces. He quickly exchanged queens without gaining any advantage, which ultimately cost him against Wei. Known for his rapid play expertise alongside Carlsen, Nakamura faced Wei's formidable challenge, who first pressed him for four hours and then secured a winning position with black in Armageddon, forcing a draw sufficient for victory.
In the women's tournament, Spain's Sara Khadem clinched an unexpected win. Despite worsening throat issues requiring antibiotics, Khadem played with black for the third time in four rounds. Her opponent, China's Tingjie Lei, ranked third globally, faltered under time pressure, missing a tactical trick that Khadem exploited immediately. The upcoming break is a welcome respite for Khadem to recuperate.
Results from the fourth round: Carlsen defeated Erigaisi 3-0; Gukesh drew with Caruana, winning with white; Nakamura and Yi Wei drew twice. In the women's tournament: Lei lost to Khadem 0-3; Ju drew with Koneru, winning with white; Vaishali drew with Muzychuk, winning with white.
Current standings: Carlsen leads with 8 points; Caruana follows with 7; Nakamura holds 5.5; Erigaisi and Gukesh are tied at 4.5; Wei has 4. Women's tournament standings: Anna Muzychuk, Ju, and Koneru share the lead with 7 points; Khadem trails with 5; Lei has 4; Vaishali is last with 3.5.
Upcoming fifth round on Saturday at 17:00, streamed live on the official portal: Erigaisi vs Nakamura; Yi Wei vs Gukesh; Caruana vs Carlsen. Women's tournament: Khadem vs Vaishali; Muzychuk vs Wenjun Ju; Koneru vs Tingjie Lei.
